Ohio State Lima announces PALS events

Winter quarter line-up includes musicians and author

Note:  Due to inclement weather, the Feb. 13 lecture has been moved to Feb. 20.

The quarterly Performing Arts and Lecture Series (PALS) will showcase pianists, vocalists and researchers on the shared campus of The Ohio State University at Lima and James A. Rhodes State College beginning this month.

All events are free and open to the public.

January 24, 2007: Grammy Award winning pianist Daryl Davis will present Klan-Destine Relationships as part of the Performing Arts and Lecture Series. Davis takes his audience on an extraordinary journey into the heart of the Ku Klux Klan. Davis uses music to bridge the seemingly uncrossable divide between the Klan’s hatred and the black man’s rage. Davis’ performance begins at 12:30 p.m. in the Martha W. Farmer Theatre for the Performing Arts.

January 29, 2007: Award winning Pianist Gregory Partain will perform at 12:30 p.m. in the Martha W. Farmer Theatre for the Performing Arts. Partain will perform a colorful piece by a Chinese composer, Charles Ives’ The Alcotts, and selected movements from Beethoven’s Appassionata. Partain is an Associate Professor of Music at Transylvania University and has toured Poland, Guatemala, Costa Rica and the U.S.

February 5, 2007: Soprano Carren D. Moham and Pianist Michael Lester will perform at 12:30 p.m. in the Martha W. Farmer Theatre for the Performing Arts. Moham and Lester will present a program featuring African-American songs and spirituals. Moham is an Associate Professor of Music at Illinois Wesleyan University and has devised two concert series, “Songs by African-American Composers” and “Songs by African-American Women.” A native Texan, Lester is the vocal coach/accompanist at Otterbein University and Minister of Music at Peace Lutheran Church.

February 20, 2007: Will Wells will present The Venice Ghetto and Beyond: Jewish Life and Experiences in the Italian Veneto from 1500-Present at 12:30 p.m. in Science 165. Wells will share photos, cultural artifacts and an overview of how and why Jews came to settle in Venice and its surrounding communities. Note: This event was originally scheduled for Feb. 13, but had to be moved due to inclement weather.

February 28, 2007: Jack Levin presents Hate and Violence on Campus at 12:30 p.m. in Science 100. Dr. Levin has addressed the issue of hate crimes in numerous venues, including the White House Conference on Hate Crimes, the Justice Department and the Department of Education. He is the author or co-author of 23 books and more than 150 articles in professional journals.
