Tom Francis to receive Town and Gown Award at June 10 Board meeting

The Ohio State University at Lima’s Board of Trustees will present the second annual Violet I. Meek Town and Gown Award at 4 p.m., Thursday, June 10, 2004, just before the regularly scheduled board meeting in the Public Service Board Room.

The 2004 honoree is Thomas M. Francis, a popular media personality in Lima whose activities have centered around his commitment to the University and his community. Well known for his support of The Ohio State University, Francis has served as a member of the Ohio State Lima Citizens Advisory Council and then as one of the original Ohio State Lima Board of Trustees. He has also served in several local and University-wide alumni positions, and with the Lima Family YMCA and Trinity United Methodist Church.

Francis has demonstrated a significant and sustained example of Disciplina in civitatem, or education for citizenship, the motto of The Ohio State University. He has always been an advocate for The Ohio State University at Lima through University and community leadership.

The award is named for Violet I. Meek, who retired as Dean and Director in 2003 after 12 years in the position at Ohio State Lima. During her tenure, she was an ardent supporter and promoter of community growth and increased interaction between the University and the people and communities in its service area. As such, the Board of Trustees created an award in her honor to recognize those working toward similar goals. The 2003 winner was David S. Adams, Associate Professor Emeritus of Sociology.

A reception will begin at 3:30 p.m. and the presentation will be held at 4 p.m. The Ohio State University at Lima Board of Trustees will meet at 4:30 p.m. The agenda follows.
