Ohio State Lima welcomes students with convocation and picnics

The Ohio State University at Lima will hold its first-ever Deanís Convocation and Picnic for incoming freshman at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004, in the Martha W. Farmer Theatre for the Performing Arts.

Convocation is the traditional academic ceremony welcoming new students to Ohio State. Students will experience their first academic procession and receive an official welcome from Dean and Director John R. Snyder. Following a quick lesson in Ohio State history and tradition, students will exit through a tunnel of faculty and staff to the Deanís Picnic in the quad.

The convocation ceremony is the first event in a yearlong series tied to Ohio Stateís First Year Experience initiative, a program that started at the Columbus campus several years ago. The events not only welcome students to campus, but also help them become connected to the University.

Following the ceremony, students can mingle with faculty and staff during lunch, explore the campus and participate in an activity fair. They will also receive a welcome bag and information about Buckeye traditions.

In the afternoon, faculty and staff will reconvene for the annual opening day meeting at 2:15 p.m. in the Reed Hall Cafeteria, following a group photo in the Cook Hall gym.

The Welcome Back Picnic for all students will run from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, in the quad.
