Honors colloquium explores conflict between population growth and biodiversity

The 2004 Winter Honors Colloquium at The Ohio State University at Lima will feature Dr. Jeffrey McKee, author of Sparing Nature: The Conflict Between Human Population Growth and Earth’s Biodiversity (Rutgers University Press 2003). The colloquium is free and open to the public from 12:30-2:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 3, 2004, in Room 100 of the Life and Physical Sciences Building.

The Honors Program sponsors a quarterly seminar presented by a speaker of national, regional or local renown. The topics and speakers are selected by members of the Buckeye Scholars, the student honor society, and the faculty Honors committee.

In Sparing Nature, McKee explores the cause-and-effect relationship between the two global trends of human population growth and the mass extinction of countless species in the plant and animal kingdoms. He demonstrates that nature is too sparing to accommodate both a richly diverse living world and rapidly expanding numbers of people.

McKee has a dual appointment as an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology and the Department of Evolution, Ecology and Organismal Biology at Ohio State Columbus.
