Auditions announced for Ohio State Lima’s The Foreigner

The Ohio State University at Lima Department of Theatre will hold open auditions for the Spring Semester theatre production of Larry Shue’s The Foreigner from 6-9 p.m., Mon., Jan. 14, and Tues., Jan. 15, 2013, in the Martha W. Farmer Theatre for the Performing Arts. Callbacks will be at 6 p.m., Wed., Jan. 16, 2013. Dr. Maria Ignatieva, associate professor of theatre, will direct.

The script is on reserve in the Campus Library in Cook Hall. Auditioners should come prepared with a memorized short monologue or poem of their choice. Auditions are open to the general public.

Set in a resort-style fishing lodge in rural Georgia, the plot revolves around the visit of two guests, Englishman Charlie Baker and Staff Sergeant "Froggy" LeSueur, a British demolition expert who occasionally runs training sessions at a nearby army base. Charlie is a pathologically shy young man who is overcome with fear at the thought of making conversation with strangers. So "Froggy," before departing, tells all assembled that Charlie is from an exotic foreign country and speaks no English. Once alone the fun really begins, as Charlie overhears more than he should—the evil plans of a sinister, two-faced minister and his redneck associate; the fact that the minister's pretty fiancˇe is pregnant; and many other damaging revelations made with the thought that Charlie doesn't understand a word being said. That he does fuels the nonstop hilarity of the play and sets up the wildly funny climax in which things go uproariously awry for the "bad guys," and the "good guys" emerge triumphant.

The public performances of The Foreigner will be at 7:30 p.m., Thurs., April 4; Fri., April 5; Sat., April 6; Thurs., April 11; Fri., April 12; Sat., April 13, 2013; and also at 2 p.m., Sun., April 14, 2013 in the Martha W. Farmer Theatre for the Performing Arts in Reed Hall.

The Foreigner is produced by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc.
