Ohio State Lima to host YMCA’s Robotics Showcase Dec. 3
The Lima Family YMCA’s middle and elementary school robotics teams will be in action at the Robotics Showcase from 4-7 p.m., Mon., Dec. 3, 2012, at Ohio State Lima’s Cook Hall Gym. Admission is free and the event is open to the public.
The Robotics Showcase teams are part of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), which was founded in 1989 to inspire young people’s interest and participation in science and technology. K-12 students are encouraged to be leaders in science and technology by engaging in mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills; inspire innovation and foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication and leadership.
The Lima Family YMCA’s high school teams will demonstrate the robot they built for the 2012 competition. The high school teams are meeting now to prepare for the 2013 FIRST Robotics Competition, which will be held in March in Cleveland.
Six elementary teams and three middle school teams, or approximately 75 students, will compete at Ohio State Lima. The elementary teams are in the Junior FIRST LEGO League and the middle school teams are in the FIRST LEGO league. The teams are usually school based. The Lima Family YMCA teams are the first YMCA-based teams in Ohio and one of nine nationally.
