Students experience poverty, injustice at Oxfam Hunger Banquet

Students will have a memorable meal and gain a new perspective on poverty and injustice at the Oxfam America Hunger Banquet at noon, Wed., Feb. 1, 2012, in the Galvin Hall Game Room on the shared campus of Ohio State Lima and Rhodes State College. The local event is hosted by the Office of Student Activities, the Bible Club and the Psych Club.

At an Oxfam America Hunger Banquet, guests randomly draw tickets that assign them to a three-tier class structure using a system based on the division of high, middle and low income groups present today. Depending on which group they represent, some participants receive a filling dinner, while others eat a simple meal or share sparse portions of rice and water. While not all guests leave with full stomachs, many gain a new perspective on the root causes of hunger and poverty—and will feel motivated to do something to help.

The event aims to raise awareness about the issues of poverty and hunger. Participants are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to donate to the West Ohio Food Bank. Area organizations including but not limited to Churches United Pantry and the Continuum of Care for the Homeless, Inc. will be on hand to provide students with opportunities to get involved with the cause.

Oxfam America is a member of the international confederation Oxfam, a confederation of 15 organizations working together with over 3,000 partners in more than 90 countries to find lasting solutions to poverty, suffering and injustice.
