Barons baseball kicks off regular season
The Barons Baseball team is gearing up for another year of play. Regular season Ohio Regional Campus Conference (ORCC) play begins at 1 p.m., Sat., March 12, 2011, at the Barons baseball diamond on the shared campus of The Ohio State University at Lima and Rhodes State College.
The Barons won the ORCC East Division in 2010, with an ORCC record of 10 wins and two losses and an overall record of 17 wins and 18 losses. Due to conference realignment, the Barons move to the ORCC West Division for 2011. Opponents new to the Barons include Miami University Hamilton, Miami University Middletown, and Ohio University Chillicothe. Most other opponents remain the same.
We worked really hard last year and really excelled as a team, said Head Coach Abe Ambroza. Its always a challenge to fill the voids when players move on, but our past success really helped us recruit an excellent freshmen class that compliments the many key returners we have today.
Eight players from the 2010 season return to the Barons team this year. Junior Codie Roberts of Shawnee High School will be utilized as a pitcher and also will be likely moving to the outfield to help fill the void left by two-time All ORCC Centerfielder Adam Hemker.
Sophomore Cory Echols of Sidney High School was selected as the ORCC Most Valuable Player in the 2010 season. On the mound, Echols had a record of eight wins and three losses, pitched 66 innings with 76 strikeouts and only 15 walks while sporting an earned run average (ERA) of 2.86. Offensively, Echols had a batting average of .360 and an on-base percentage of .474.
Sophomore Tyler Slonecker from Kenton High School also returns after being selected to the 2010 ORCC First Team. Last year, Slonecker had a batting average of .362 with 20 of his 38 hits coming in the 12 ORCC contests. His on-base percentage of .492 was the second highest on the team.
Other sophomores expected to play key roles this year are Dustin Craig from Benjamin Logan, Ryan Kortokrax from Delphos Jefferson, Greg Patterson from Allen East, and David Wurst from Ottoville.
In addition to its solid core of returning players, the team welcomes back two young men who took short hiatuses from Barons baseball. Sophomore Michael Allen from Ada High School returns and plans to compete for innings. In the 2008 season, Allen led the Barons in innings pitched with 57. Sophomore Damon Koverman from Spencerville High School rejoins the team, competing for time as catcher, pitcher and first base.
New to the Barons this year are ten freshmen: Johnathan Aldridge, Alliance High School; Aaron Baldwin, Kenton High School (2009 Western Buckeye League Honorable Mention honoree); Ian Bracey, Lincolnview High School (2010 Northwest Conference Honorable Mention honoree); Chris Crosswhite, Winton Woods High School (First Ancient Valley Conference Second Team honoree); Kyle Hall, Pandora-Gilboa High School (2008 and 2010 Putnam County League First Team honoree and 2010 Blanchard Valley Conference First Team honoree); Rusty Lammers, Miller City-New Cleveland High School (2009 and 2010 Putnam County League Player of the Year, 2009 First Team All Ohio as a position player and 2010 Second Team All Ohio as a pitcher); Cody Martin, St. Marys Memorial High School (2009 Western Buckeye League Second Team honoree and 2009 All District Second Team honoree); Wade Russell, Libery Benton High School; David Spearman, Sidney Lehman Catholic High School (2010 All Area Player of the Year, 2009 MVP First Team All Area Infielder, 2007 and 2008 Second Team All Area Infielder, and 2010 First Team All Ohio); and Marcus Vonderembse, Ottawa-Glandorf High School.
