Doug Sutton-Ramspeck’s poetry collection wins Ciardi Prize

Doug Sutton-Ramspeck, Coordinator of the Writing Center and a Lecturer in English, has written a book of poetry called Black Tupelo Country. The book received the 2007 John Ciardi Prize for poetry and is published by BkMk Press (University of Missouri-Kansas City.) The annual Ciardi Prize recognizes the best book-length collection in English by a living author. Black Tupelo Country was chosen from 326 entries by final judge, poet Leslie Adrienne Miller. The Library of Congress describes Black Tupelo Country as a poetry collection that “explores the themes of animism, superstition and anachronism as they occur in rural Midwestern landscapes and urban strip malls.”
