Lima, OH – The Barons hosted OSU Newark for an ORCC
doubleheader on an unseasonably warm early April afternoon Tuesday here on the
Lima Campus. OSU Newark took game one behind a strong outing by pitcher Shea
Elliott who pitched a shutout in Newark’s 3 – 0 victory. Barons pitcher Mike
Allen (Ada) went the distance as well, giving up three runs, all earned on 8
hits, 1 walk, and 2 strikeouts.
While game one flew by,
lasting only 1 hour and 15 minutes, game two took on an entirely different
persona as the Barons exploded offensively to take the night cap 11 to 4. On
the game the Barons had 11 hits, of which 9 were singles with 1 double and 1
homerun. In addition to the 11 hits, the Barons also managed to swipe 11 bags
on 12 attempts, which was a real catalyst to the great offensive output.
Leading the way
offensively for the Barons was Justin Mayer (Shawnee), going 2 for 3, with a
double, 2 runs scored, 2 stolen bases, and an RBI. Other key contributors were
Matt Helmstetter (St. Marys), going 2 for 3, with 2 singles, 1 run scored, 1
stolen base, and 2 RBI, and Paul Geuy (Benjamin Logan), going 2 for 4, with a
homerun, 1 run scored, 1 stolen base, and 2 RBI.
On the mound for the
Barons was Matt Beggin (Lima Senior), pitching the first 3 innings to earn the
win, allowing 2 unearned runs on two hits with 4 walks and 4 strikeouts. The
win raises Beggin’s record to (1 – 0). The other 4 innings were handled by
Tyler Deam (Triad), as he allowed 2 earned runs on 4 hits with 4 walks and 4
strikeouts.
The split brings the
Barons record to 2 & 5 overall and 2 & 1 in ORCC play.
The Barons will now go
on the road for their next 10 games as they will face; Ohio Northern
University, OU Zanesville doubleheader, Marietta College doubleheader, Clark
State, OU Lancaster, OSU Newark doubleheader, and OSU Mansfield.
The Barons will finally
return home for a matchup with Southern State on April 24th at 2:30,
here on the Lima Campus.
