Lima, OH – The Barons have started 2008 on fire. After beating OSU Newark on Saturday, the Barons came back home Wednesday night and won easily by a score of 99 to 74 over the Harriers of Miami University at Hamilton. Both wins show how the Barons have improved on the season as the lost to OSU Newark earlier this season, and only beat MU Hamilton by 2 their last meeting.
Wednesday’s contest with MU Hamilton started off with a lot of back and forth play, good fast breaks, and hot shooting by both teams as MU Hamilton held on to a slim lead for much of the first half. Then, with just under five minutes remaining in the half, coach Dave Koverman had the Barons step up the pressure with a ¾ trap defense. This was the turning point in the game as the Harriers had no answer to the trap and quickly the Barons took the lead and kept it going in to the half with a score of 41 to 33.
In the 2nd half the Barons again came out as the aggressor on defense with more pressure traps and quickly built their lead up to as many as 25 points with 14:32 remaining in the game. From this point on, the Barons never allowed the Harriers to bring the game back within reach as they held on for the convincing win.
The Barons were led on the night by a pair of 18 point efforts by Jordan Swift (Shawnee) and Brent Cook (Spencerville). Two other Barons were also in double digits on the evening as D.J. Evans (Lima Central Catholic) had 16 points, and Justin Mayer (Shawnee) added 11 points.
The Barons will be looking to avenge an earlier loss as the take on OU Eastern on Saturday. The Barons were tripped up by OU Eastern on December 18th by a score of 85 to 92. Tip off for this Saturday’s game is set for 4:00pm for the men and 2:00pm for the women at the Hangar in Cook Hall.
