Lima, OH – It was a contest of streaks that ended with some back and forth scoring where the team with the ball last ended up winning. That’s what happened last evening in the Hangar as the Barons Women went down at the hands of the Wright State University Lake Campus Lakers 53 to 52.
WSUL had a 10 point lead with just over 15 minutes left in regulation when Coach Livchak decided to switch up the defense with a 2-2-1 trap press. The press was executed to perfection and helped the Barons go on a run of 16 points unanswered over a span of 10 minutes. At the 4:30 mark WSUL ended the cold streak and finally found a way to break through the tough Barons’ press. The game switched leads several times after that point and set up some crucial free throw attempts. With a deficit of one point, Kayla Doepker (Lima Central Catholic) made both of her attempts with 2:00 remaining to give the Barons back the lead. Then with 0:50 remaining, after WSUL had regained the lead Allison Brodman (Bluffton) made two more free throws to again take back the lead for the Barons. WSUL would strike right back however and again retake a one point lead on a mid range jumper with 12 seconds left in the game. There was no panic in the Barons though as Allison Brodman found a lane and dropped a layup with 3.70 seconds remaining. However, 3.70 seconds turned out to be barely too much time to give WSUL has they were able to get the ball to within 30 feet and attempt a game winning 3 pointer. The shot was off the mark, but unfortunately Rachel Davis (Temple Christian) was called for a foul while she was contesting the shot. Stauffer of WSUL made her first two attempts to win the game for WSUL.
The Barons were paced by a balanced offensive
attack consisting of nine different contributors to the scoreboard. Leading the
way was Lauren McKinley with 10 points. Brodman, Doepker, and Courtney Mauk
(Bath) all added eight for the Barons.
Next up for the Barons is ORCC foe OU Lancaster on Saturday, Dec. 10th here at The Hangar in Cook Hall, tip off is set for 1pm, with the Barons Men following up the act with their tip off set for 3pm.
