Lima, OH – Barons baseball has received eight recognitions for 1st Team ORCC, 2nd Team ORCC, and ORCC ALL ACADEMIC.
Sophomore Shortstop Brandon Burke and Freshman Second baseman Dan Ankrum, both earned 1st Team ORCC honors, while Freshman Pitcher Adam Von Sossan and Freshman First baseman/Outfielder John Segura earned 2nd Team ORCC honors. Named to the ORCC All-Academic Team were; Sophomore Third baseman Joe Schmook, Freshman Catcher/First baseman Matt Jay, Freshman Outfielder/Pitcher Patrick O’Brien, and Freshman Pitcher/Outfielder Ron Stewardson.
For Burke, this is the 2nd time he was named All ORCC, and first time he was named to the 1st Team ORCC. Burke led the Barons in homeruns with 2, was second on the team in RBI with 16, and was third on the team in runs scored with 20. Ankrum, led the Barons in batting average hitting .383. Ankrum also led the Barons in doubles, triples, runs scored and stolen bases with 14 doubles, 2 triples, 33 runs scored, and 19 stolen bases. Segura, was at or near the top of the list in every statistical category, but where his value is most easily noticed was his Quality At Bat Percentage, a team best 57.39%. QAB%, is measurement of at bats versus a Quality at bat, which is (any one of: 3 pitches after 2 strikes, 6+ pitch Abs, XBH, HHB, BB, SAC Bunt, SAC FLY, HHB). The Barons also keep their own stat called the QAB+% that includes “productive outs”, meaning the batter moved the runner over from 2nd, hit a fly ball with a runner at 3rd even if runner doesn’t score, etc.., and Segura also led the Barons in QAB+% with a 72.27%. The fourth member of the Barons receiving All ORCC honors, Von Sossan, did so based on his performances on the mound. Von Sossan was one of the Barons top arms all season, and had a few of the top outings for the Barons in several key ORCC matchups.
The four members of the Barons selected to the ORCC ALL ACADEMIC Team had excellent seasons on the field and in the classroom. Schmook, was a mainstay at third base for the Barons, playing 31 games while bringing home a 4.0 GPA. O’Brien, the Barons starting center fielder most of the year, also saw time on the mound while bringing home a GPA of 3.58. Jay, split his time between catching and playing first base while bringing home a GPA of 3.36. Stewardson, ate up the 2nd most innings on the team and saw some time in the outfield while bringing home a GPA of 3.33.
The Barons finished the 2014 season with a record of 18 & 26, ending their season with a 3rd place finish in the ORC Tournament.
