2011 Barons Volleyball Preview

Lima, OH - The Barons volleyball squad is “Small but Mighty” this year.  The roster includes only seven players with three returning players. Those returning players are:  Right-side hitter, Alena Crouse, who was named O.R.C.C. Honorable Mention last year; middle hitter, Megan Gerdeman who was named 1st team all conference last year; and setter, Miranda Strous.  The Barons’ newcomers who have shown overall dedication and enthusiasm this summer include hitters: Brittany Sopher (Arcadia), Alex King (Bowsher H.S.), Emily Watkins (Indian Lake) and libero, Cassie Gryzbowski (Shawnee).

The Barons Volleyball Team has been practicing diligently over the past month to develop into what they hope will be a competitor in the ORCC in 2011.  Coach Ricker realizes that the small roster may pose some obstacles if any player should get sick or hurt, but she is happy with the team’s chemistry and optimism thus far.  “We have really focused this year on the “what ifs”.  For example: what if our setter gets hurt?  What if we don’t have an outside hitter?  I am confident that all the players pretty much know each other’s positions, and should a situation arise where someone can’t play, the players will not panic.”

The Barons are excited for the season to begin.  This year they will be extending their schedule to include more area college teams to get some more game play before the conference begins.   Coach Ricker explains, “Last year I felt like we were behind the 8-ball all season.  We started playing conference games and all the other teams had been playing games for 2-3 weeks when we were just starting our season.  By the time we got into the groove, the season was over.”  Some of the area college matches include: UNOH, Findlay JV, & Bluffton JV.  Also, the Barons will be hosting a Tri-Match on September 10th with Wright Patterson Air Force Base and Cedarville JV; followed by the Newark Invitational on September 11th.   “I am confident that all of the pre-conference games will prepare us to have a successful conference season in 2011.”

The Barons focus this year has been on improving their serve receive, having more aggressive serving, and playing solid defense. Coach Ricker states, “I am really hoping that we take control of the court with our accurate hitters and aggressive offense.  Elements of the game that we need to continue to improve upon will be improving court communication and limiting unforced errors and quick transitions from offense to defense.”
