Lima, OH - With an entirely new squad for the 2014 season, there are many unknowns for Barons Volleyball, yet Coach Ricker is optimistic that this could be a very successful season!
Looking at the schedule, the team was able to get some early season experience in by going to OSU Newark and participating in the Titan Invitational where they won once and lost twice with the two losses coming to the tournament champions and runners up!
Coming up, the Barons have ORCC play starting this weekend, with a few non conference games scattered throughout the 2014 schedule. A big part of the schedule where the team surely hopes to be able to gain some momentum will be their four game home stand starting 9/15/14 and ending 9/22/14 with games vs U. Northwestern Ohio JV on the 15th, Miami Hamilton on the 17th, OU Chillicothe on the 20th, and U of Findlay JV on the 22nd.
Coach Ricker has commented that she is very excited about the depth and versatility of this year’s team, but what has fans excited is the Barons’ ability to hit, and hit hard they do.
So, come on out to watch the Barons Volleyball team this fall as they chase an ORCC Title in 2014!
Lima, OH – Barons baseball has received eight recognitions for 1st Team ORCC, 2nd Team ORCC, and ORCC ALL ACADEMIC.
Sophomore Shortstop Brandon Burke and Freshman Second baseman Dan Ankrum, both earned 1st Team ORCC honors, while Freshman Pitcher Adam Von Sossan and Freshman First baseman/Outfielder John Segura earned 2nd Team ORCC honors. Named to the ORCC All-Academic Team were; Sophomore Third baseman Joe Schmook, Freshman Catcher/First baseman Matt Jay, Freshman Outfielder/Pitcher Patrick O’Brien, and Freshman Pitcher/Outfielder Ron Stewardson.
For Burke, this is the 2nd time he was named All ORCC, and first time he was named to the 1st Team ORCC. Burke led the Barons in homeruns with 2, was second on the team in RBI with 16, and was third on the team in runs scored with 20. Ankrum, led the Barons in batting average hitting .383. Ankrum also led the Barons in doubles, triples, runs scored and stolen bases with 14 doubles, 2 triples, 33 runs scored, and 19 stolen bases. Segura, was at or near the top of the list in every statistical category, but where his value is most easily noticed was his Quality At Bat Percentage, a team best 57.39%. QAB%, is measurement of at bats versus a Quality at bat, which is (any one of: 3 pitches after 2 strikes, 6+ pitch Abs, XBH, HHB, BB, SAC Bunt, SAC FLY, HHB). The Barons also keep their own stat called the QAB+% that includes “productive outs”, meaning the batter moved the runner over from 2nd, hit a fly ball with a runner at 3rd even if runner doesn’t score, etc.., and Segura also led the Barons in QAB+% with a 72.27%. The fourth member of the Barons receiving All ORCC honors, Von Sossan, did so based on his performances on the mound. Von Sossan was one of the Barons top arms all season, and had a few of the top outings for the Barons in several key ORCC matchups.
The four members of the Barons selected to the ORCC ALL ACADEMIC Team had excellent seasons on the field and in the classroom. Schmook, was a mainstay at third base for the Barons, playing 31 games while bringing home a 4.0 GPA. O’Brien, the Barons starting center fielder most of the year, also saw time on the mound while bringing home a GPA of 3.58.
